Pop Culture

There is no doubt in my mind that Michael Jackson was an influential musician and performer, bringing a new sound and definition of pop music in the 1980's. I'd be lying if I said I was the biggest Michael Jackson fan, or let alone a fan. I do not own any of his music, but I grew up listening to it. Really, I did.

Some of my earliest memories of pop music revolved around listening to "Beat It" at my parents restaurant at Crenshaw and Adams. I would play the song over and over again on the jukebox at the restaurant, and occasionally play "Thriller." My dad even thought MJ was a gifted, amazing performer. Like every young child, I couldn't help be memorized by his Moonwalk and attempted to do it at home, or at work. However, from that time forward, I rarely listened to Michael Jackson, and the last song I can clearly remember is "Black or White."

I'm sad that he died so unexpectedly, more so because his life ended so tragically and in such a bizarre manner. Upon his death, Michael Jackson was mourned and remembered more for his music and dance moves, than the latter part of his bizarre life. I am happy to see that. He was gifted, and enormously popular.
